El Cotillo Beaches: Snorkeling and Surfing

El Cotillo, a small fishing village located on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura, is a hidden gem for beach lovers and water sports enthusiasts. With its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters (you don’t even have to put on snorkeling gear to spot fish), and perfect waves, El Cotillo offers a paradise-like experience for everyone.

Snorkeling in El Cotillo

El Cotillo is renowned for its exceptional snorkeling opportunities. The calm and shallow waters of the lagoons make it an ideal spot for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike. The clear waters provide excellent visibility, allowing you to explore the vibrant marine life beneath the surface. The vibe is very laidback, but it can be a bit crowded in the summer. But if you walk a litter bit further you can always find a nice spot. Don’t be surprised to see some visitors who “forgot” their swimsuit, because there are quite some people who like to sunbath in the Adam or Eve costume.

One of the must-visit snorkeling spots in El Cotillo is the Los Lagos Lagoon. This natural pool is sheltered from the ocean waves, creating a tranquil environment for snorkeling. Here, you can encounter a variety of colorful fish and even the occasional stingray. Also a great place to bring little children, to enjoy the small pools without big waves. Don’t forget your sunscreen, because even in the shade you will easily sunburn because with the cool breeze, you don’t notice you are turning in a tomato. The first time I visited I needed lots of aloe vera after sun gel.

For those seeking a more adventurous snorkeling or diving experience, the El Toston shipwreck is a must-see. Located just off the coast of El Cotillo, this sunken ship has become a haven for marine life. Snorkeling around the shipwreck allows you to witness the fascinating underwater ecosystem that has developed over the years.

Surfing in El Cotillo

El Cotillo is a paradise for surfers, offering some of the best waves in the Canary Islands. Whether you’re a new or an experienced surfer, there are waves suitable for all levels. The consistent swell and variety of breaks make El Cotillo a surfer’s dream destination. You can rent a board for a couple of bucks a day in the nearby town, and even walk to the shore if you like.

One of the most popular surf spots in El Cotillo is Playa de los Charcos. This beach offers a long sandy stretch with multiple peaks, providing ample opportunities for surfers to catch waves. The beach is easily accessible and has a relaxed atmosphere, making it a favorite among locals and tourists alike. This laid-back surf vibe is also present in the town.

For more experienced surfers, Punta Blanca is a challenging reef break that offers powerful and hollow waves. This spot requires skill and experience, but the adrenaline rush is well worth it. The breathtaking views of the coastline from the lineup add to the overall surfing experience.

El Cotillo Restaurants and Shopping

Restaurants in El Cotillo

El Cotillo is not only a paradise for beach lovers but also a culinary delight. The village is home to a variety of restaurants that cater to different tastes and budgets. From traditional Canarian cuisine to international flavors and vegan restaurants like Happy Cactus. There is something to satisfy every palate. Even if you are just looking to enjoy some tapas or dessert.

Shopping in El Cotillo

El Cotillo may be a small village, but it offers a unique shopping experience for visitors. The village is dotted with boutique shops and local markets, where you can find handmade crafts, souvenirs, and locally produced goods. You can find lots of bohemian shops, with all kind of cute and colorful clothes to wear during your stay on the island.

The El Cotillo Artisan Market is a must-visit for those looking to explore the local arts and crafts scene. Here, you can find a wide range of handmade products, including jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and artwork. The market is held every Friday and Sunday, providing an opportunity to support local artisans and take home a unique memento. Don’t forget to check the jewelry made from stones that were found on the island, like volcanic stones (black with little holes) and olivine (mintgreen gemstone also known as peridot).

El Cotillo Nature

El Cotillo is not only known for its stunning beaches and water sports but also for its natural beauty. The village is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and nature reserves, offering opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring the unique flora and fauna of the area.

One of the must-visit natural attractions in El Cotillo is the Tostón Lighthouse. Located on a rugged cliff, the lighthouse offers panoramic views of the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. The surrounding area is a nature reserve, home to a variety of bird species, including falcons and herons.

The nearby Corralejo Natural Park is another natural wonder worth exploring. This vast expanse of sand dunes stretches along the coast, creating a surreal landscape reminiscent of the Sahara Desert. The park is a protected area and is home to various plant and animal species, including the endangered Canarian Houbara Bustard. The two towns are nearby and you can easily visit both on the same day. Although I can tell you that it’s not a challenge to spend the entire day in El Cotillo.

Summary

El Cotillo is a paradise for beach lovers, snorkeling fans, other water sports enthusiasts, and nature enthusiasts alike. The pristine beaches, exceptional snorkeling, diving and surfing opportunities, plus affordable culinary and boho shopping experiences make it a must-visit destination in Fuerteventura.
