El Cotillo Lagoons – stunning sea views and a perfect place to snorkle

The “El Cotillo Lagoons” is a stunning natural attraction that offers visitors a unique and beautiful experience. These lagoons are a series of small, crystal-clear pools nestled between volcanic rocks and surrounded by golden dunes of fine sand. With its calm and shallow waters, El Cotillo Lagoons are perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. It is also a family-friendly place, where you can enjoy your time as a family with small children. But even if you like to go skinny dipping all by yourself, no one will mind.

The lagoons also provide a safehaven for various species of marine life and birds. Making these lagoons a popular spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers. El Cotillo Lagoons is a must-visit destination in Fuerteventura and one of the favorite places I have shown my guests. I haven’t met anyone yet, who didn’t love this place.

The Breathtaking Beauty of El Cotillo Lagoons in Fuerteventura

El Cotillo Lagoons is truly a hidden gem that showcases the breathtaking beauty of this stunning island in a miniature version. Located on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura, El Cotillo is situated near Corralejo. The lagoons, also known as “Los Lagos” in Spanish are natural pools that are formed by volcanic rocks, creating all kinds of small natural swimming pools. You can best visit when the tide is low. Because the lagoons are home to a variety of marine life, it is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving. But even if you are not a big fan, you can spot fish just by looking down in the waters.

Keep an eye out for the elusive European otter, which can be spotted playing in the water or hunting for fish along the shores. But consider yourself lucky if you can spot this animal because even after quite a few visits I haven’t spotted any. The lagoons are also a breeding ground for several species of turtles, including the endangered loggerhead turtle.

Near these lagoons, there are also excellent opportunities for surfing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding. The strong winds and consistent waves, outside the shelter of these lagoons, make this area a paradise for adrenaline junkies. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced surfer, there are surf schools and rental shops available to cater to your needs. Just walk into the town, which is around 5 minutes, and there are shops where you can rent a board for as little as 5 euros a day.

It is not hard to miss the beach and lagoons, and although it can be busy in the summer, there is always a nice spot to find if you don’t mind walking a bit further. The stretch of beach with the lifeguard (yellow hut) is the busiest. You can easily park your car near the lagoons, or even walk from the town. Make sure to bring some treats with you, because there aren’t any food stalls or beach bars. Therefore you must walk inside the town.  So pack your bags, grab your camera or binoculars, and get ready to be captivated by the breathtaking beauty of these stunning lagoons. The atmosphere (even in the summer) is tranquil and perfect for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I promise that the El Cotillo Lagoons will leave you in awe.
