1.3 million euros in machinery for organic waste management
The new equipment is destined for the island’s waste‑transfer plants, enabling them to receive and process the so‑called “fifth bin,” which will be used for separating biowaste.
Lola García, president of the Island Council, highlighted the significance of the purchase:
“This represents a major step forward in our commitment to sustainability, improving selective collection and boosting recycling rates on the island.”
The council has acquired modern machinery for the transfer stations scattered across Fuerteventura. The equipment will handle the upcoming fifth bin, slated to become operational this year, and will help prevent biowaste from impacting the environment.
García added:
“With this investment we strengthen the operational capacity of our facilities, optimise separation processes, and provide citizens with a more efficient and responsible waste‑management system. We continue to work toward a more sustainable model that aligns with environmental goals and the current needs of Fuerteventura.”
Enrique Pérez, Councillor for Waste Management, explained the technical details:
“The supply includes five mobile floors and three tractor heads, amounting to an investment of €1.3 million, financed with NextGeneration EU funds.”
He continued:
“The aim is to facilitate waste‑treatment work for municipalities that are far from the Zurita Environmental Complex. At the same time, we contribute to reducing the carbon footprint, avoiding environmental damage, and moving toward planetary decarbonisation.”
Pérez also noted that the project meets the circular‑economy targets set for the coming years, delivering a qualitative leap in waste management with the active participation of increasingly eco‑conscious citizens.
The transfer plants are located in Tuineje, Lajares (La Oliva) and Mal Nombre (Pájara). These facilities, owned by the Island Corporation, receive household waste collected by municipal services, weigh it, compact it, and prepare it for transport to the Zurita Environmental Complex for final treatment.
