20 USESIC Civil Guard officers become active in Fuerteventura on March 3
The Citizen Security Unit of the Command (USESIC) assigned to the island of Fuerteventura will become operational on March 3, when 20 Civil Guard officers from this specialized group are deployed on the island.
“The same interior sources say that by April there will already be 30 members of this specialized unit on the island.”
Sources from the island’s Socialist Party explained a week ago that additional operatives were requested for Gran Tarajal (10 more) and indicated that by April the full complement of 30 members will be present, although it is still unknown whether Gran Tarajal will become their permanent base.
USESIC is an operational branch of the Civil Guard that reinforces public safety through rapid intervention, support to other units, and crime prevention. Its main responsibilities include:
- Responding to high‑risk situations such as operations against organized crime.
- Controlling crowds at public events.
- Assisting in searches, raids, and arrests.
The Civil Guard currently:
- Covers 65 % of Fuerteventura’s territory for citizen security.
- Serves 82.54 % of the island’s registered population.
- Provides protection to virtually the entire hotel sector.
The recent establishment of a Commander post in Fuerteventura has raised the island’s strategic importance within the Ministry of the Interior, allowing the Civil Guard to expand its portfolio and create specialized units like USESIC.
