2027 budget sets aside €4.5 million for Puerto del Rosario wastewater plant

The Canary Islands budget includes €4.5 million for Puerto del Rosario’s wastewater plant and €130,000 for early work on a future plant to remove salt from seawater in southern Fuerteventura.

The Canary Islands Government’s 2027 budget for territorial policy and water includes €4.5 million for Puerto del Rosario’s wastewater treatment plant. It also sets aside €130,000 for early work on a future plant in southern Fuerteventura. This plant would remove salt from seawater.

Regional minister Manuel Miranda presented the department’s spending plans to a committee of parliament on 4 November 2026. The plans include funds for two water projects on Fuerteventura. The report gives no dates for when building work will start or finish on either project.

Funding for water projects

The Directorate-General for Water is set to receive €40.1 million in 2027, up 6.8% on 2026. The funds will help start or continue projects designed in 2024. These projects followed updated planning with the island water councils.

The plans also include €3.6 million for test drilling at sites for future seawater intakes across the islands. A further €1.28 million is set aside for the seven water management plans covering 2028–2033.

Miranda also said a €20 million contribution from the Spanish Government for the full water cycle was still outstanding.

Wider emergency spending

The department’s emergency budget is set to rise by 6.4% to €35.7 million across the Canary Islands. This includes €410,000 for safety measures in bathing areas. Another €240,000 is planned for campaigns to prevent fires, drownings and other risks. The report does not state how much of this money is for Fuerteventura.

The department’s total budget for 2027 is €107.5 million, down from €111 million in 2026. The source says the fall is due to the end of temporary European Next Generation funding. This funding accounted for €7.4 million in the previous year’s accounts.
