3 million euros for renovating and upgrading the Zurita Environmental Complex
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its Waste Department, has put out to tender the adaptation works for the Zurita Environmental Complex, a fundamental renovation project aimed at improving the operation of these facilities, costing almost 3 million euros.
“Improving waste management and treatment is one of the main priorities of the island corporation.” – Lola García, President of the Cabildo
According to President Lola García, the Cabildo is driving an investment of about 40 million euros to promote actions outlined in the Island Waste Plan. The adaptation and urbanisation works at Zurita represent one of the largest interventions foreseen in this planning.
The Zurita Environmental Complex includes the facilities needed for the management and treatment of waste generated in Fuerteventura. Enrique Pérez, the island’s Waste Councillor, notes that the installations require a renovation to match the volume of waste they receive and to keep improving treatment across the island.
“These facilities require a renovation to adapt them to the volume of waste they receive and to continue improving treatment at the island level.” – Enrique Pérez, Waste Councillor
The works, scheduled to be completed within eight months, will not only upgrade electrical and telecommunications cabling but also encompass a broader urbanisation project. This includes:
- Installation of more efficient street lighting
- Resurfacing of the access boulevard and internal roads of the complex
- Widening of sidewalks and expansion of parking areas
- Replacement of the deteriorated perimeter fence with a higher, reinforced concrete wall
“The works will not only improve electrical and telecommunications cabling, but also upgrade the urbanisation of Zurita with new lighting and resurfaced pavements.” – Island Councillor
Another key focus is the enhancement of the general water supply network required for Zurita’s operations, together with the addition of a hydrant system and a new reservoir to strengthen fire‑prevention measures. These improvements aim to further boost the complex’s performance on an island that has become the leading Canary Island in recycling growth, thanks to the Cabildo’s initiatives and rising public awareness.
