400 Young People Raise Awareness Against Cyberbullying Through Educational Theater
Under the title “Let the Game Begin,” this initiative tackles equality and the prevention of gender‑based violence in digital environments.
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its Education and Youth Department, partnered with the General Directorate of Youth to organize the theatrical performance “¡Que comience la partida!”. The innovative show is aimed at 1st‑ and 2nd‑year secondary school students and focuses on preventing gender‑based cyber‑violence while promoting equality in online spaces.
The activity was created and performed by artist, researcher and educator Nira Santana, a specialist in gender, art and technology. It blends theatre, audiovisual storytelling, live performance, real‑world data and audience interaction. Through the production, students are invited to reflect on:
- The role of women in digital culture
- Stereotypes prevalent in video‑games
- Harassment dynamics that occur online
The performance took place on March 18 at the Auditorio Insular de Fuerteventura, bringing together 400 students from several schools in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, including:
- IES Puerto del Rosario
- IES Puerto Cabras Rafael Báez
- IES Santo Tomás de Aquino
- CEIP Sagrado Corazón de Jesús
- IES San Diego de Alcalá
The show runs for approximately 90 minutes and concludes with a colloquium, providing a space for dialogue and reflection on the impact of digital culture, respect in online environments, and the importance of building more egalitarian technological spaces.
“Equality education must also be present in the digital spaces that form part of our youth’s daily life. Initiatives like this show allow us to address, through the familiar language of art and culture, fundamental issues such as the prevention of gender‑based violence on the internet, critical thinking and respect in digital coexistence,” said Adargoma Hernández, Counselor for Education and Youth of the Cabildo.
“It is essential to make female role models visible in fields such as technology or video games, and to give students tools to critically analyze the content they consume and the dynamics that occur in digital communities,” Hernández added.
The performance also aims to:
- Dispel sexist stereotypes in gamer culture
- Highlight women’s contributions to video‑game history
- Inspire technological vocations among adolescents, especially girls, fostering a more inclusive and respectful digital leisure
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura emphasizes the importance of promoting educational and cultural actions that help prevent gender‑based violence and encourage responsible use of digital environments among young people, reinforcing values of equality, respect and coexistence both inside and outside the classroom.
