50 years of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

“We demand the release of Sahrawi political prisoners and full respect for human rights in the occupied territories.”

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), the Majorero Assembly – Canarian Coalition Fuerteventura reaffirms its support and solidarity with the Sahrawi people in their legitimate struggle for self‑determination and independence.

The island‑based party stresses the importance of marking this commemoration, noting that it occurs in a complex international context marked by new agreements and shifts in the relations of the United States and the European Union with the Kingdom of Morocco, which directly affect the Western Sahara conflict.

From AM‑CC, and in line with resolutions of the European Court of Justice and the United Nations, “we recognize the Polisario Front as the legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people,” and therefore “we denounce Morocco’s illegal occupation of Western Sahara and demand an immediate end to the human‑rights violations occurring in Sahrawi territory,” the party adds.

Furthermore, the Majorero Assembly – Canarian Coalition Fuerteventura wishes to remind the Spanish State government of its historical and legal responsibility regarding Western Sahara, a territory still pending decolonisation. Consequently, it insists on Spain’s obligations as the administering power to promote a just and definitive solution to the conflict by holding a self‑determination referendum.

For all these reasons, “we demand the release of Sahrawi political prisoners and full respect for human rights in the occupied territories,” the nationalist party states. It also underscores its continued backing of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and calls for the full implementation of its mandates to monitor and guarantee the protection of human rights in the occupied territory.

Historically, the Sahrawi and Canary peoples have maintained a close bond of fraternity and solidarity, which the Majorero Assembly – Canarian Coalition Fuerteventura vows to keep defending. “We reiterate our commitment to the Sahrawi cause and express our solidarity with its people in the fight for freedom and dignity,” the nationalist formation concludes.
