5th Antigua Craft Fair Opens, Showcasing New and Young Artisans

The ribbon‑cutting ceremony marked the launch of the fifth edition of the Encounter and Sale of Handicrafts in Antigua’s main square. About thirty professional artisans—both men and women—were on site, showcasing a variety of meticulously crafted pieces. Throughout the day, a steady stream of visitors wandered the stalls, examined the works, and repeatedly returned to purchase the items that caught their eye.

“The day is spectacular for enjoying this new handicraft event,” said Mayor Matías Peña García of Antigua. He highlighted the presence of newly certified young artisans who are debuting at the Fuerteventura 2025 Handicraft Encounter and Sale, an initiative organized by the municipal Culture Department together with the Colectivo Mafasca Foundation. The event, which began during the pandemic, aims to provide economic support to the local craft sector.

Margarita De Vera, representative of the Colectivo Mafasca, encouraged everyone to visit the square this weekend: “You’ll be able to appreciate the quality of each trade from the thirty artisans present, and we thank them for their hard work and effort in bringing their best creations—perfect gifts for Christmas.”

Councilor Jonathan Peña pointed out the parallel programme accompanying the fifth Encounter, which includes handicraft workshops and live performances of traditional Canarian music blended with Latin rhythms, boleros, and familiar songs, offering entertainment for the whole family.

The event not only provides a marketplace for artisans to sell their work but also serves as a cultural showcase, reinforcing Antigua’s commitment to preserving and promoting its rich craft traditions.
