A 15th-Century Port at Pozo Negro

A team of archaeologists explains the importance of the site to the mayor of Antigua

On Thursday, 6 November, the mayor and the councilor for Historical Heritage, Sandra Torres, visited the ongoing work at the Pozo Negro archaeological site.

The archaeologists amazed the mayor and the councilor by showing them tableware ceramics, jars, and coins from distant kingdoms, intermingled with clay utensils crafted by the indigenous people on the spot. The finds suggest a cultural crossroads—a coexistence of civilizations with markedly uneven development, prompting fascinating reflections on mutual learning.

The mayor praised the work carried out by this young team of archaeologists, a project driven by Rosa López, funded by the Government of the Canary Islands, and supported by the University of Las Palmas.

“Their stubbornness is matched only by their enthusiasm for digging and uncovering pieces of our history, whether it rains, the wind blows, or the sun blazes,” noted Matías Peña, emphasizing that their work deserves recognition and valorisation.

Councilor Sandra Torres added that the municipality will help organise an open public day before the excavations conclude, to present the site, the discovered objects, and the emerging structure that is already being recognised as a major reference point on the island, a status it has held for many, many years.
