A cold upper-level trough will affect Fuerteventura
This cold air aloft will be brief, but it will strengthen showers in the northern islands.
In a process similar to the 2021 Filomena event—though without the massive snowfall that accompanied that storm—a polar trough packed with a large amount of cold air aloft will absorb the Cathaysa (Francis) low pressure system over the Iberian Peninsula today, according to the Canary Islands meteorology site Meteo Komando, represented by Atis Tirma.
As the trough elongates, it will reach its closest point to the Canary Islands this afternoon, bringing temperatures at the 500 hPa level of below –16 °C over Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, and below –20 °C over Lanzarote and the Chinijo Archipelago. Although this cold air will be fleeting over the islands, it will intensify showers in the northern parts.
In Lanzarote and the Chinijos, which will be nearer to the trough and thus experience more cold air aloft, isolated thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, and hail may accompany any showers that develop during the day.
