A massive dust plume sweeps the south this weekend

Temperature rise and anticyclonic weather until Tuesday

The arrival of a “crying trade wind,” generated by the anticyclone sitting over Madeira, will bring higher temperatures and sunnier conditions to the island of Fuerteventura.

Clearer days than cloudy ones and light northeast breezes will also help divert a large dust plume—currently forming over Niger, Mali, and Chad—toward the south.

This first major winter dust intrusion passes south of the islands, and all indications suggest it will not affect them. The sea will remain relatively calm, with wave heights not exceeding 1.5 m along the north and west coasts, though caution is still advised.

Changes expected during the coming week

  • From Monday, wind direction will shift to come from the northwest, bringing the possibility of light drizzles from isolated fronts that could reach the islands.
  • Sea conditions will worsen, with waves reaching up to 3.5 m in height.
