A Well-Deserved Tribute to Majorca's Farming Community in Feaga
The 2026 Agricultural, Livestock and Fisheries Fair of Fuerteventura (FEAGA) presented an institutional tribute to the men and women who have shaped Majorera agriculture.
The island’s president, Lola García, together with the Councillor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Enrique Pérez, and accompanied by mayors and councilors from the region, handed out awards to Juan de Saá and Armando Melián (posthumously, Tuineje), Daniel Melián (Antigua), Antonio González (La Oliva), Pedro Cabrera (Pájara) and Ángeles Valdivia (Puerto del Rosario).
Highlighting the Importance of the Tribute
“They are an example for the whole Majorera society and for the administrations. It is essential that citizens know the work they have done and that they are recognized as they deserve,” said President Lola García.
Award Recipients
Daniel Melián (Antigua) – Recognized for his contribution to agriculture through Vidaloe, a family business founded in 2014. The award was presented by First Deputy Mayor Juan Cabrera.
Antonio González Carrión (La Oliva) – Honored for a lifetime devoted to farming, with Councilor Rubén González of La Oliva speaking on stage.
Pedro Cabrera (Pájara) – A farmer since 1969, whose work sustained ten children, evolving from traditional market stalls to modern greenhouses. The mayor of Pájara, Alejandro Jorge, and Councilor Pepe Díaz attended the ceremony.
Ángeles Valdivia Alonso (Puerto del Rosario) – Recounted how she began planting, threshing and sowing as a child, a tradition she passed on to her children and grandchildren. The award was presented by Mayor David de Vera and Councilor David de León.
Armando Melián González (Tuineje) – Awarded posthumously for his promotion of agricultural cooperatives, founding the Aloe Factory in Tiscamanita, and championing key advances such as a water‑subsidy agreement with the regional consortium. His son, Armando Melián, received the prize on stage, with Mayor David Herrera of Tuineje and Councilor Jonathan Peña present.
Juan de Saá Padilla (Tuineje) – Recognized for 28 years of leadership in the Gran Tarajal agricultural cooperative and his lifelong advocacy for farmer organization. The award was presented by President Lola García and Councillor Enrique Pérez.
These recognitions underscore the pivotal role of agriculture in elevating Fuerteventura’s profile within the Canary Islands and preserving the island’s rural heritage.
