Air Quality Expected to Be Extremely Poor Starting at Noon

Great caution for people with respiratory illnesses, the elderly and infants

The Air Quality Index compiled by Meteored warns of extremely unfavorable or dangerous air quality from this noon until tomorrow morning across most of the Canary archipelago. People with pre‑existing health conditions should avoid exposure as much as possible while the episode lasts.

Government pre‑alert
The Canary Islands Government has declared a pre‑alert for dust (calima) today, urging the population—especially those most vulnerable—to take precautions:

  • Stay indoors and keep windows closed.
  • Avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.
  • Refrain from intense physical effort.
  • Drive carefully on highways due to reduced visibility.

When will conditions improve in the Canaries?

  • Early tomorrow (Tuesday) elevated suspended dust concentrations are still expected, but a gradual improvement is forecast as the day progresses.
  • From Wednesday onward, only light or moderate dust is possible, and overall air quality should improve considerably.

Weather outlook

  • The east‑northeast wind will weaken, though occasional gusts exceeding 50 km/h may occur.
  • European models predict abnormally high daytime and nighttime temperatures for mid‑February, with local maximums ranging between 25 °C and 30 °C on the leeward side of the eastern flow.
