Air traffic controllers call strike affecting Fuerteventura from April
Air traffic controllers from the unions USCA and CCOO will strike at 14 airports across Spain, including:
- Madrid‑Cuatro Vientos
- Lanzarote
- Fuerteventura
- La Palma
- El Hierro
- La Gomera
- Castellón
- Burgos
- Huesca
- Ciudad Real
- Vigo
- A Coruña
- Jerez
- Sevilla
At these locations, the company SAERCO provides tower air‑traffic control services. The unions state that, starting at 00:00 on 17 April, they will “initiate an indefinite strike due to the critical deterioration of our working conditions and operational safety.”
“Staff levels have been reduced to a minimum since SAERCO took over the service; the cut‑backs are drastic. In towers such as Lanzarote or Fuerteventura, the workforce has been reduced by more than 50 % compared to the original tender specifications. Operations are now at the limit of what is sustainable.”
The unions also argue that work‑life balance and rest are being undermined:
“The company has turned availability into a permanent 24‑hour guard duty, violating our right to disconnect. Already‑started vacations are being cancelled, and shift changes are imposed with only 9 hours of notice.”
Furthermore, they warn that air safety is at risk:
“A fatigued controller under constant stress cannot guarantee the excellence required by the service. Continuous improvisation in the control sectors and non‑compliance with RD 1001/2010 jeopardize everyone’s safety.”
