Airport‑Pozo Negro Highway Project Approved

The Public Works, Housing and Mobility Department of the Government of the Canary Islands, led by Pablo Rodríguez, has approved the project to build a new section of the Puerto del Rosario – Morro Jable highway, between the airport and the Pozo Negro junction on Fuerteventura.

The work, part of the 2018‑2027 Canary Islands‑State Roads Agreement, will run through the municipalities of Puerto del Rosario and Antigua. Its aim is to extend the island’s North‑South axis, improve mobility and strengthen road safety. The project foresees a five‑year construction period with a total budget of €215.9 million, to be distributed over several annual installments.

“The new link will improve the connection between the airport, the main tourist areas and the urban centres of central and southern Fuerteventura, contributing to the island’s economic and the mobility of residents and visitors,” said Minister Pablo Rodríguez.

“The stretch between the airport and Pozo Negro will include a tunnel of more than one kilometre due to environmental constraints. It is the first such tunnel on Fuerteventura, giving the island’s network a modern and efficient infrastructure that promotes more sustainable mobility,” he added.

The tendering process will begin shortly, with the goal of publishing the call on the procurement platform later this year after completing the necessary formalities.

The Project

The plan comprises four main connections:

  • Airport Link – connects to the FV‑2 and serves the island’s primary air gateway.
  • El Castillo Link – joins the FV‑413, providing access to the tourist and urban centres of Caleta de Fuste, Triquivijate and Antigua.
  • Las Salinas Link – maintains the connection with the existing FV‑2 and the southern part of Caleta de Fuste.
  • Pozo Negro Roundabout – resolves the intersection with the FV‑50 towards Agua de Bueyes and Antigua.

Key Works

  • Construction of a 1.2 km tunnel between kilometre points 9+230 and 10+430, including entrance and exit “false tunnels.”
  • Erection of a 190 m viaduct over the Torre ravine.
  • Several structures on the Airport and El Castillo links, a grade‑separated crossing at Las Salinas, and three underpasses to maintain continuity of rural roads and accesses.

Rosana Melián, Director General of Road Infrastructure, highlighted that this will be the first approved project to incorporate renewable‑energy installations:

“The aim is to cover the entire electricity consumption of the new lighting network with photovoltaic panels, making the installation energy‑neutral and self‑sustaining. This contributes to decarbonisation and reduces atmospheric emissions.”

The renewable‑energy plan includes:

  • Airport and El Castillo links – 19 and 22 solar panels respectively, installed alongside each link.
  • New tunnel – 41 panels placed on the road median to power its lighting system.

These measures will ensure that the new highway segment operates with a minimal environmental footprint while delivering improved connectivity for Fuerteventura’s residents and visitors.
