All Canary Islands Parliament groups back the Sahrawi cause, except Vox

The Canary Islands Parliamentary Intergroup Supporting the Sahrawi People (PSOE, CC, PP, NC, ASG and AHI) reinforced its support for the Sahrawi people, agreeing with the Polisario Front on a common agenda and reiterating the demand for a self‑determination referendum in Western Sahara.

The Canary Islands Parliamentary Intergroup Supporting the Sahrawi People — which includes all parliamentary groups in the Canary Islands except Vox — held a working meeting with the Polisario Front’s delegate in the Canary Islands, Alisalem Sidi Zein, during which it reinforced its institutional commitment to the Sahrawi cause.

Representatives from PSOE, CC, PP, Nueva Canarias‑Bloque Canarista (NC‑BC), Agrupación Socialista Gomera (ASG) and Agrupación Herreña de Independientes (AHI) participated in the meeting, demonstrating a cross‑party backing from several groups represented in the Parliament of the Canary Islands.

During the encounter, the groups agreed on a 2026 work agenda and called for the release of Sahrawi political prisoners, as well as for a United Nations‑mandated self‑determination referendum. They also demanded an end to Morocco’s exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources, accusing the European Union of complicity in that process.

Alisalem Sidi Zein briefed the deputies on the current situation in the Tindouf refugee camps, the occupied territories, and the broader conflict with Morocco, reiterating the Sahrawi people’s commitment to hold the referendum in line with UN resolutions, including the latest Security Council resolution, according to a communiqué sent to the media by Nueva Canarias.

Alberto Negrín, president of the Canary Association of Friendship with the Sahrawi People, reported on solidarity projects and activities taking place in the archipelago, among them the “Vacaciones en Paz” (Peace Vacations) programme.

Several deputies also confirmed their participation this weekend in a meeting of intergroups from other autonomous parliaments, to be held in Navarre, with the aim of coordinating new joint actions at the institutional level.
