AM-CC Fuerteventura challenges AENA's abandonment of the island airport
The political party joins the demands of the operational staff of the airport’s control towers, which are managed by the company SAERCO.
The Majorero Assembly – Canarian Coalition Fuerteventura (AM‑CC) has denounced AENA’s abandonment and the lack of oversight over its concessionary companies, and has added its voice to the claims of the workers in the control towers operated by SAERCO at Fuerteventura Airport.
In this sense, the formation backs the complaint filed by the controllers’ collective, who warn of staff shortages, deteriorating working conditions, and the direct impact on operational safety.
“The scarcity of resources and the poor working conditions of air controllers pose a risk to aviation safety and, therefore, to air‑travel users,” they emphasize.
According to the controllers, a gradual reduction in personnel has not been compensated by new hires, leading to an increased workload and repeated breaches of rest‑period regulations. This is especially worrying in a sector where fatigue and stress can severely affect service performance and potentially compromise flight safety.
The AM‑CC stresses that “the safety of people is being jeopardised in an archipelago where air connectivity is essential,” highlighting the particular vulnerability of a territory that depends on air transport.
This context prompted the unions Unión Sindical de Controladores Aéreos (USCA) and Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) to call an indefinite strike starting at 00:00 on 17 April, after negotiations with the concessionaire failed and a request for mediation was filed with the Inter‑Confederal Service of Mediation and Arbitration (SIMA).
Facing the lack of progress, AM‑CC demands that AENA intervene immediately with the concessionaire SAERCO to guarantee dignified working conditions and restore normal service with full safety guarantees.
“In the Canary Islands, and especially on non‑capital islands like Fuerteventura, flying is not a luxury; in many cases it is a basic necessity, determining whether one can receive medical treatment or not,” the party notes.
AENA’s Repeated Abandonment of Fuerteventura Airport
The nationalist formation also points out that this is not an isolated case. It recalls a similar situation affecting the island’s gardening and maintenance staff, also employed by a concessionaire, who suffered unpaid wages and precarious employment, directly impacting the state of the infrastructure and leading to the neglect of exterior areas.
They criticize AENA’s “constant neglect” of the island.
“AENA behaves like a private company without the necessary oversight,” they assert, noting the progressive deterioration of the airport despite its high traffic. Among the contested decisions are the removal of essential services such as the airport medical unit and the second runway.
Furthermore, they question the announced €1.8 billion investment earmarked for improving the Canary Islands’ airports, criticizing the unilateral adoption of decisions. They also highlight the proposal to expand Fuerteventura’s airspace by merging military and civilian zones, “which would affect not only the municipalities of Puerto del Rosario and Antigua—already impacted by noise footprints—but also extend to Tuineje and Pájara,” they add.
For all these reasons, the Majorero Assembly – Canarian Coalition insists that the Government of the Canary Islands assume greater competencies in the archipelago’s airport management, with the aim of guaranteeing a service tailored to the real needs of the islands.
