AM-CC Holds Island Political Council on Justice and Security in Fuerteventura

The Majorera Assembly – Canary Islands Coalition in Fuerteventura convened on Tuesday, 16 September, for an Island Political Council and Island Assembly at the Puerto del Rosario headquarters. Delegates discussed the island’s main challenges in justice, security, health, sport and road infrastructure.

The meeting was attended by the Canary Islands Government’s Minister of Presidency, Public Administration, Justice and Security, Nieves Lady Barreto, who presented the progress made during the first two years of the legislative term. She highlighted the launch of the future Palace of Justice of Fuerteventura, after resolving land‑grant issues and adapting the project to a new site. Barreto noted that the building—whose model was recently unveiled at the Cabildo—will involve an investment of €40 million and will centralise all judicial services on the island in a single location.

Regarding security, the minister emphasized the collaboration agreement between the Canary Islands Police and any municipalities that request it, aiming to strengthen police presence at festivals and in everyday life. She explained that the “shock plan” launched in 2024 has already yielded positive results in municipalities such as Pájara, Tuineje, La Oliva and Puerto del Rosario, with Antigua joining the initiative recently. Barreto also announced that Fuerteventura will soon have its own Canary Islands Police headquarters in La Lajita, a future northern delegation, and that 141 new officers will be assigned to the non‑capital islands following the latest recruitment processes.

From the AM‑CC side, officials reiterated the demand for the State to meet the required Guardia Civil and National Police ratios on the island, pointing out that Fuerteventura’s population has doubled in the last decade. They also called for an increase in local police personnel across municipalities and for granting the Canary Islands Police greater security competencies.

Other topics addressed included:

  • Promoting sport as a tool for social inclusion.
  • Improving health infrastructure, such as expanding the dialysis service in Costa Calma and opening 24‑hour emergency rooms in the central‑south zone.
  • Upgrading road sections identified as priority for road safety.
