AM-CC recalls the example of 55,000 beds stalled in its CPI

The Assembly of Majorera – Canary Coalition Fuerteventura (AM‑CC) held its first Insular Political Council of 2026 on Wednesday. The meeting presented the party’s annual work plan to militants and public officials and announced preparations for the 50th anniversary of the Assembly of Majorera, scheduled for 2027.

The plan includes training sessions for both party members and public officials, focusing on themes the nationalist formation deems “key”: identity, demographic challenge, communication, innovation and new technologies.

The session also revived the “Fuerteventura Needs You” project, aimed at responding to citizens’ demands and creating new sector‑specific debate spaces in agriculture, health, roads and territorial planning.

AM‑CC stressed that these initiatives aim to build a participatory, sustainable island model that respects the territory’s identity. Protecting the island’s land has historically been a hallmark of the party.

The PTEOTI Example: Halting the Construction of 55,000 Hotel Beds

The party recalled that “preventing areas such as the Saladar de Jandía or the Island of Lobos from being occupied today by large hotel complexes has been possible thanks to the historic claims of the men and women of the Assembly of Majorera.” Thanks to the PTEOTI (Territorial Planning and Environmental Protection Plan), the construction of 55,000 hotel beds was stopped, arguing that the island should not absorb a further increase in tourist capacity.

Other topics discussed included the demographic growth recorded in Fuerteventura over the past two decades, the need to regulate population increase and advance a residency law, as well as measures to mitigate tourism’s impact, such as introducing an ecotax and halting new hotel constructions.

Small‑Scale Alternative Energies in Anthropised Areas

Regarding the energy model, AM‑CC reiterated that renewable energy deployment must not lead to indiscriminate land consumption. The party advocates:

  • Utilizing anthropised zones and building rooftops for solar installations.
  • Creating energy communities as sustainable alternatives.

“It is the most effective way for residents to see a real reduction in their electricity bills, while promoting efficient and environmentally‑respectful renewable energy investment.”

Territorial Planning and Municipal Planning: Gaps in Fuerteventura

The party warned that Fuerteventura’s flat orography makes it more vulnerable to external interests. Consequently, AM‑CC set as a priority the drafting of municipal general plans and the Island Territorial Planning Plan (PIOF) to avoid uncontrolled development.

“We will not allow multinational companies to use Fuerteventura’s territory for their own benefit and outside the general interest,” the nationalists declared.

Recognition of Candelaria Umpiérrez

At the close of the session, the Insular Political Council expressed support for Candelaria Umpiérrez following her decision to end her term as mayor of Tuineje, acknowledging her work during a particularly complex mandate and praising her loyalty, dedication and commitment to the political formation.
