AMF urges council to immediately implement La Cerquita Rural Firefighters Park
The AMF spokesperson in the Fuerteventura Cabildo, Sergio Lloret, denounces that the Cabildo has kept the La Cerquita Rural Firefighters Park (Antigua) paralysed, “despite already having a plot of more than 15,000 m² earmarked for its construction.”
According to a press release, the park should serve more than 180,000 people—both residents and tourists—in the municipalities of Antigua, Tuineje and Betancuria, areas that lack their own fire stations and rely on scattered island‑wide resources.
“The only island‑wide park that currently serves that zone is in El Cuchillete,” the statement notes, forcing long journeys and resulting in insufficient response times for fires, accidents, and rural or coastal emergencies.
“The safety of thousands of citizens is at stake every minute this park remains unbuilt,” the spokesperson asserts.
Lloret recalls that the Cabildo paid over €600,000 in the previous term to acquire the La Cerquita plot and even presented the project publicly as part of the “Your Safety Closer” policy. “Today that commitment is wet paper, and the park is still not built,” he reproaches.
He also criticises the Cabildo for awarding the drafting of the Municipal Emergency Plans (PEMU) for Antigua, Tuineje and Betancuria—costing around €40,000—while still failing to implement the infrastructure that would give those plans real substance.
“Paper documents are useless if there are no material means to apply them,” the spokesperson declares.
“Each day this park stays closed is a political decision that endangers the lives of inland and coastal citizens,” Lloret concludes.
The AMF motion will be debated in the ordinary plenary session of the Cabildo scheduled for 26 September at 09:00 hours, in the corporation’s plenary hall.
