Amid water outages in island towns, the PP demands interim measures

Incidents reported by the CAAF in localities such as El Cotillo, El Roque, Lajares, Majanicho and Villaverde in the north, and in Pozo Negro, Teniscoquey, Tequital, Las Playitas and La Fuentita in the centre‑south, have led the PP of Fuerteventura to call for “provisional” and “urgent” measures. From the opposition in the Island Council, the Popular Party demands water tanks for the affected zones and requests the appearance of the council president and the area minister.

The heat wave continues on Fuerteventura, and after a series of breakdowns announced by the CAAF at various points on the island, residents’ complaints have pushed the Popular Party, as the opposition in the Island Council, to demand solutions from the governing coalition.

Water‑Supply Failures in the North and Centre‑South of Fuerteventura

The Water Supply Consortium of Fuerteventura (CAAF) has reported several faults in the transport and distribution network that have caused supply interruptions since last weekend in different parts of the island.

According to statements issued on 10 August by the CAAF, a failure in the pipeline between Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal forced the suspension of service in Pozo Negro, Teniscoquey, Tequital, Las Playitas and La Fuentita. On the same day, the public body announced incidents in the north, potentially affecting El Cotillo, El Roque, Lajares, Majanicho and Villaverde—some already resolved and others still under repair. The consortium, which depends on the Island Council of Fuerteventura, indicated that its technicians are working to restore the supply “as soon as possible.”

The PP Will Request Water Tanks in Writing from the Council and the CAAF

In a statement that is both measured and firm, the PP stresses that “we do not want to politicise water,” but rather “bring transparency to its management” and address a challenge that “transcends the legislative term and political ideology,” according to Claudio Gérrez, spokesperson Claudio Gutiérrez — “being without water for more than fifteen days while the Island Council of Fuerteventura offers no alternative solution is unacceptable.”

For this reason, the Popular Party of Fuerteventura announced that this week it will file a petition addressed to the Council president, is definitively solved in the various affected points, “water tanks be made available to the affected residents to alleviate the current lack of supply in places such as Villaverde, El Cotillo, El Roque or Tefía.”

“There are parties that ran for office promising that portable desalination plants would solve the problem in three months. Two years later, we are the same or worse.”
— Claudio Gutiérrez, PP spokesperson

In response to the situation, the PP has submitted a request for the council president and the minister to appear before the Council to examine the implementation of the PICABAS programme works scheduled for the remainder of 2025 and 2026, as well as the related budget reallocations.

Gutiérrez underscored that the water issue “cannot be solved in three months nor in four years” and that the Island Water Supply Plan, valued at €154 million, “lacks full financing and the Hydraulic Works Agreement with the Spanish Government has not been signed.”

This Summer “There Will Be Cuts,” but Fewer Than in Previous Years

At the beginning of July, before the current series of breakdowns occurred, the Council’s delegated minister responsible for the consortium, Adargoma Hernández, told Fuerteventura Digital that this summer would be faced “with greater guarantees” than in previous years.

Hernández acknowledged that “there will be cuts,” but ruled out a repeat of the five‑ to ten‑day interruptions experienced in past summers.
