Antigua: Home to Fuerteventura’s Happiest Residents

Overall, happiness indices in the Canary Islands rank among the highest in the European context we live in.

The Canary Islands consolidate their position as one of Spain’s territories with the greatest quality of life. Coinciding with International Day of Happiness, the Spain Happy Index 2026, compiled by Sonneil Homes, places Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as the archipelago’s happiest municipality, scoring 88.80 points out of 100.

The ranking draws a map where wellbeing has a coastal accent. Following the Gran Canaria capital, the next municipalities are Santa Cruz de Tenerife (88.06), Arona (87.24), Arrecife (87.06) and Santa Lucía de Tirajana (87.05), forming a “top 5” shaped by stable climate, proximity to the sea and access to essential services.

The study confirms that climate remains a differentiating factor in the islands: more than 300 sunny days a year, scarce rain, and mild average temperatures of 20‑23 °C. This is complemented by connectivity, the availability of health, education and airport infrastructure, and the coastal character of most top‑ranked municipalities.

Alongside the large cities and tourist hubs, the index also highlights smaller localities such as Tías, Tinajo, Yaiza and Antigua, which slip into the top ten. All share a common pattern: high meteorological stability and closeness to the coastline. Similar municipalities—San Bartolomé, Agüimes, Teguise, Telde or Adeje—reinforce the idea of an archipelago where wellbeing concentrates mainly in coastal zones.

Nevertheless, the report stresses that happiness in the Canary Islands does not follow a single model. Interior or more rural municipalities such as Vega de San Mateo, Tejeda or Artenara also appear in the ranking, where factors like tranquility, natural surroundings and territorial cohesion compensate for less regular climate.

The Spain Happy Index analyses over 8,000 Spanish municipalities using variables such as number of sunny days, precipitation, average temperature, wind conditions and access to services, providing a comprehensive snapshot of wellbeing across the country.
