Antigua hosts all Canary Islands at the 37th Island Craft Fair 2026

Handicrafts, Shows and Teaching of Artisan Trades in Antigua Until Sunday, May 10

The mayor of Antigua, Matías Peña, the spokesperson of the Mafasca Collective Foundation, Margarita De Vera, together with the president of the Fuerteventura Island Council, Lola García, councilor Lolina Negrín, and culture councilor Jonathan Peña, cut the inaugural ribbon on Thursday afternoon, May 7, at the 37th Fuerteventura Island Handicrafts Fair 2026.

“We thank the large attendance and the presence of island authorities and all municipalities at the opening. Before we begin the speeches, I ask for a unanimous applause in memory of the recently deceased Mr. Santiago Travieso.” – Mayor Matías Peña

Matías Peña highlighted the regional reach of this flagship handicraft event, supported by artisans from all the islands, whom the town welcomes and facilitates attendance for. He emphasized that the fair showcases the best representation of artisan trades—noble in raw material—that define the islands’ identity, origin, and history.

“The cost of this fair already reaches 300,000 euros. This economic effort will be guaranteed by Antigua, with or without external collaboration, defending thirty‑seven years of improved editions thanks to the dedication of generations of artisans.” – Mayor Matías Peña

Margarita De Vera, representing the Mafasca Collective Foundation, praised the volunteer work of the foundation and the Antigua City Council, ensuring that every artisan feels at home while displaying their unique, irreplaceable pieces. She especially congratulated Bernard Glauser, the Island Handicrafts Award winner and jeweler, for his contribution to the fair’s growth.

“Our goal is for all present artisans to feel as if they are in their own homes, showcasing their works and treasures—each piece truly unique and irreplaceable.” – Margarita De Vera

Lola García, president of the Fuerteventura Island Council, welcomed the event as more than a fair—it is a source of pride for the island and the culmination of year‑long work by local artisans, representing the most authentic expression of the community and serving as a showcase to promote the consumption of local handicrafts. She also highlighted the council’s year‑round support for the sector through economic, logistical, and training assistance, aimed at preserving cherished traditions.

“This event is a pride for our island, the crowning achievement of the work our artisans carry out throughout the year. It is the most authentic expression of our people and a platform to champion the importance of buying local handicrafts.” – Lola García
