Assault on a basketball referee in Corralejo sparks nationwide attention
National sports press condemns the violent, unsportsmanlike conduct of a Los Toscones player
The assault that took place last Saturday on a Tenerife‑born referee during the Los Toscones vs. Fuenlabrada Third‑Division FEB match is now appearing on headlines throughout the country because of the player’s savage behavior.
The incident, already reported to the police, occurred in the José Perdomo Umpiérrez Pavilion in Corralejo. After committing a personal foul, the home‑team player rammed the referee from behind. While the official lay defenseless on the floor, the player struck him a second time, delivering a heavy stomp to the centre of his chest.
“You’re a son of a bitch,” the player shouted while attempting a third assault, but he was restrained by several teammates before he could land another blow.
The video circulating on social media captures not only the attack but also the spectators’ jeers, a level of hostility that “doesn’t belong on a sports court.”
The Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) has condemned the assault, disqualifying the player and announcing forthcoming disciplinary sanctions. The Association of Basketball Referees (AEBA) has expressed its full support for the affected official.
