AVANFUER Marks Ten Years of Environmental Volunteering in the Canary Islands
Overview
The Association of Volunteers for Nature Assistance in Fuerteventura (AVANFUER) is marking its tenth international meeting with young people and experts, held from 4 to 7 September 2025 in Fuerteventura, to strengthen the connection with nature and reflect on humanity’s impact on the environment.
The X International Environmental Volunteering Meeting in the Canary Islands
AVANFUER is driving the celebration of the “X International Environmental Volunteering Meeting in the Canary Islands,” a forum for exchange and reflection on conservation and environmental volunteering that, in this edition, commemorates ten years of activity.
Under the slogan “Back to the Roots,” the gathering aims to highlight the importance of the project’s origins and the link between natural, cultural heritage and environmental processes, inviting participants to consider current and future challenges of volunteer action.
The event brings together young volunteers from all islands of the archipelago, as well as leaders of environmental‑volunteering projects at local, national and international levels.
Programme
- Four days of activities combining lectures, panel discussions, a cine‑forum, and hands‑on volunteering such as waste collection in natural areas.
- Site visits to emblematic locations across the island.
- Venues include the Youth Hostel of Tefía, the Island Youth Center, and other natural and cultural spaces in Fuerteventura.
Funding and Institutional Support
The project is funded by the Youth Department of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, reinforcing its status as a benchmark for environmental volunteering in the Canary Islands and as an inter‑generational, multicultural meeting space.
Official Statements
“This year we wanted to dedicate the programme to the beginning of the project, with the aim of further enhancing its patrimonial and cultural value, always in a sustainable way with the territory, which is a hallmark of AVANFUER.”
— Adargoma Hernández, Island Youth Councilor
“AVANFUER has been congratulated for ten years of commitment, becoming one of the most important associations on the island of Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands and nationally.”
— Marlene Figueroa, Councilor of the Biosphere Reserve
“The association is a project that was born from the need to protect the environment. It is a space created by several people who are part of an environmental‑volunteering collective in the islands, with the goal of sharing experiences and working on areas of common interest.”
— Yanira Cáceres, President of AVANFUER
Conclusion
The ten‑year milestone underscores AVANFUER’s growth from a local initiative to a recognized leader in environmental stewardship, fostering collaboration among volunteers and raising awareness of sustainable practices throughout the Canary Islands.
