Balearia Conducts Docking Trials at Morro Jable Pier

A Balearia ferry carried out docking trials on Sunday at the port of Morro Jable, signaling the company’s intention to add the vessel to the Morro Jable‑Las Palmas route. The service, previously operated by Armas and Fred Olsen, has seen a reduction in frequency in recent months, now running only on weekends, and the plans of the new owner remain unclear.

Balearia Acquires Armas

On 25 August, it was announced that Balearia had reached agreements with the owners of Armas Trasmediterránea to acquire its operations in the Canary Islands and the Alboran Sea, as well as a portion of the Strait of Gibraltar routes that were largely taken over by the Danish shipping group DFDS.

The transaction, pending approval from the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC), will encompass:

  • Management of 15 vessels
  • Operation of existing maritime lines
  • Integration of 1,500 employees (both on‑shore and onboard)

These moves mark a significant consolidation in inter‑island ferry services and could reshape the connectivity landscape of the Canary archipelago.
