Bizum payments in physical stores roll out gradually starting this

Banks will be the ones informing their customers of the date when the service will be available

Starting this Monday, purchases in physical stores will be able to be paid with Bizum, but only by users whose banks already begin offering the service. The rollout will be gradual, with merchants adopting Bizum as a payment method over time.

Banks will notify their customers of the exact date the service becomes available, defining the territories, sectors, and schedule for offering Bizum payments in physical stores. Consequently, the rollout dates for users, businesses, and merchants will vary by bank, as has happened with other functionalities, Bizum told EFE.

The popular instant‑transfer solution, which will now coexist with cards and cash as a payment method in stores, was already usable for sending or receiving money between individuals, for certain payments to public administrations (fines, sports‑center tickets, taxes), and for online shopping.

Bizum payments in stores will be contact‑less: customers simply need to bring their mobile phone close to the point‑of‑sale terminal, triggering a account‑to‑account transfer just like any other Bizum service.

Customers can pay in store through their own Bizum app, their bank’s app, or via Bizum Pay, the new digital wallet from Bizum.

If users register with Bizum Pay, they can start making payments immediately, without adding additional payment methods or configuring anything else.

Unlike other digital wallets, Bizum Pay is a multi‑bank wallet that can hold other payment instruments (credit and debit cards) as long as they belong to a bank that offers Bizum Pay.

The Spanish instant‑transfer solution Bizum, with more than 31 million users, is currently the only service of its kind in Europe that enables direct payments in physical stores.

Bizum already allowed payments in e‑commerce, and more than 100,000 online merchants now accept Bizum for purchases.
