Body recovered about 20 metres from where four youths fell on Sunday

A lifeless body was located on Tuesday by the Special Underwater Activities Group of the Civil Guard (GEAS) during the search operation for the missing American tourist who fell into the sea on Sunday in southern Lanzarote.

According to the Lanzarote Emergency Consortium, the divers recovered the body roughly 20 metres from the spot where, on Sunday, four young people were swept away by a sudden wave.

The youths – American students studying in Madrid – had entered the Los Charcones area on foot, despite the road being blocked by a fence. While they were there, a strong wave caught two of them in the water. One of the two was rescued about 800 metres out by a helicopter from the Canary Islands Government’s Emergency and Rescue Group, officials said. The remaining three were rescued, but the body of the missing tourist was later found by the underwater team.
