Cabildo Begins Construction of Gran Tarajal Residential Care Home
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has begun work on the Gran Tarajal Sociosanitary Residence, a facility that will add 90 new sociosanitary places to the island’s capacity.
“The construction works are now a reality, providing a long‑awaited sociosanitary resource for dependent people and their families, fulfilling one of the Cabildo’s top priorities,” said island president Lola García.
President García highlighted the coordinated effort of the Cabildo’s Social Action, Procurement and Infrastructure departments, together with the Tuineje Town Council, that made the project possible. She added that “we are also working to tender other resources in the rest of the municipalities, such as a Day‑Care Centre in Costa Calma and in the Antigua‑Betancuria area, in coordination with the local councils.”
Social Action Councillor Víctor Alonso noted that “these works will provide a first‑class sociosanitary infrastructure in Gran Tarajal, enabling quality care that meets the needs of our island’s dependent elderly.”
Tuineje Mayor Candelaria Umpiérrez emphasized the importance of having a dedicated facility so that seniors can receive the specialized services they need to promote autonomy and overall well‑being.
The design, construction and equipment contract for the Sociosanitary Residence and Day‑Care Centre for dependent seniors was awarded for €14.3 million to the joint venture Ecología y Construcción Fesumar S.L‑José Díaz García S.A. The project is co‑financed by the Cabildo, the Government of the Canary Islands and the EU Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR).
Located on a 4,701 m² plot in the Valle del Aceitún—made available through land‑release actions by the Cabildo and coordination with the Tuineje Town Council—the facility will host two centres:
- Sociosanitary Residence – 60 places, offering 24‑hour residential care all year round.
- Day‑Care Centre – 30 places for dependent seniors.
Services will include individualized care, combined family and group activities, permanent accommodation and meals, medical‑health care, personal autonomy promotion with counseling, occupational therapy, psychological support, a family‑respite programme, and leisure and free‑time activities, among many others.
