Cabildo Boosts Protection of Fuerteventura's Historic and Archaeological Heritage with New Signage

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its Cultural Heritage department, has launched an initiative to reinforce the protection of the island’s historical and archaeological heritage by installing informational signage at various archaeological sites and heritage spaces.

The measure is preventive in nature and aims to remind residents and visitors of the fragility of the island’s heritage and the importance of respecting these areas, which are integral to Fuerteventura’s history and cultural identity.

Sites Already Equipped with Signage

Informational panels have already been placed at several high‑traffic locations or places that have suffered damage in the past, including:

  • Casas de Pozo Negro I
  • El Cardón
  • Cueva de Esquinzo
  • Montaña del Sombrero
  • Natural Monument of Montaña de Tindaya
  • The surroundings of the Casa de los Coroneles

Through this signage, the Department of Cultural Heritage reminds visitors that they are in protected archaeological environments, where it is forbidden to disturb the ground, collect materials, or alter existing elements.

“The archaeological heritage of Fuerteventura is largely composed of remnants from the island’s aboriginal past, many of which are still awaiting study,” explained the island’s Minister of Culture and Heritage, Rayco León. “We must prevent damage caused both by visitors’ ignorance and by intentional acts such as the looting of materials or the carving of inscriptions on rocks and structures.”

The Cabildo also notes that any alteration or damage to heritage can constitute a criminal offence under article 323 of the Penal Code or an administrative violation under the Canary Islands Cultural Heritage Law, with penalties that can reach up to €600,000 in the most serious cases.

The island authority thanks the public for helping to detect possible infringements and protect these historic spaces. If you witness damage or actions that could affect the archaeological heritage, you can report it via email at [email protected] or by phone at 928 862 300.

With this initiative, the Cabildo seeks to raise awareness of the importance of preserving Fuerteventura’s cultural heritage, ensuring its protection for future generations.
