Cabildo Celebrates Zurita Projects Resuming After Years of Government Delays

The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, celebrates that the works on the sorting and composting plant of the Zurita Environmental Complex are finally set to start, now that the contract with Tragsa has been formalized by the autonomous community.

“The contract was formalized today, 22 October, so that works that depend on the Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Ecological Transition, which had been halted, can be resumed. These facilities are essential for the modernization of Zurita and the improvement of waste treatment in Fuerteventura,” the island president explained.

In a recent meeting held in Fuerteventura, Lola García recalled the commitment made by the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, who said the contract would not be delayed beyond this October. That commitment has been fulfilled, allowing the second phase of the works to continue. The island president also praised that, despite the delay, the Ministry of Ecological Transition, headed by Mariano Hernández Zapata, has finally formalized the agreement to restart the works.

The Waste Minister, Enrique Pérez, reminded:

“From the island corporation we have repeatedly emphasized to the Ministry of Ecological Transition the importance of proceeding with works that will increase the percentage of waste recycled in Fuerteventura.”

In this way, waste management aligns with regulations and will meet the targets set by the Island Waste Plan.

According to Enrique Pérez:

“This new plant will allow the separation of waste that currently goes to the landfill by 20‑30 %, which, combined with growing public awareness, will prevent the disposal of 50 % of the waste that currently ends up in the landfill.”
