Cabildo Completes Two Major Water Projects in Southern Fuerteventura

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is advancing two strategic projects to strengthen the island’s water security. The refurbishment and expansion of the Marcos Sánchez Pumping Station and the construction of the Guerime Reservoir are now in their final stages, aiming to improve supply and ensure stability in the distribution network.

The Marcos Sánchez Pumping Station is set to be completed after an investment of €777,500. The works will optimise pumping capacity and make water transport to the various population centres more efficient.

The Guerime Reservoir is one of the most anticipated projects in the island’s south. With a budget of €1,767,852.26, it will hold 5,000 m³ of water in two tanks, reinforcing the distribution network and guaranteeing a more stable supply for households and businesses in the municipality of Pájara.

“With these infrastructures we reinforce the water security of the island’s south, meeting a historic demand from residents and guaranteeing an essential resource—water—that is key to families’ quality of life and to Fuerteventura’s economic development,” said Lola García, President of the Cabildo.

The works are being carried out by the Cabildo’s Infrastructure Department, led by Blas Acosta, in coordination with the Water Supply Consortium of Fuerteventura (CAAF).

“The Marcos Sánchez refurbishment and the Guerime reservoir are part of an integrated strategy to modernise the island’s water supply system, improving efficiency and responsiveness to the population’s needs,” emphasized Adargoma Hernández, CEO of CAAF.

Alejandro Jorge, Mayor of Pájara, described the projects as “fundamental to ensure a stable, high‑quality supply, benefiting residents and strategic sectors such as tourism and agriculture.”

Alexis Alonso, Councillor for Public Works and Water, added that “the Guerime reservoir answers a decades‑long demand, marking a before‑and‑after in guaranteeing water supply in the island’s south.”

These interventions are part of the Cabildo and CAAF roadmap to modernise the supply network, reduce losses, and build a more efficient, sustainable water system prepared for Fuerteventura’s future.
