Cabildo Drives Over €53 Million Housing Investment with Other Administrations

.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is launching a coordinated housing programme worth more than €53 million. The funding comes from a joint effort between the island’s governing body, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the municipalities of Fuerteventura. The initiative strengthens institutional commitment to providing dignified housing, especially through protected‑home schemes.

Strategic framework

The investment follows the island’s housing strategy, which is built on three complementary pillars:

  • Construction of Officially Protected Housing (VPO).
  • Rehabilitation of the existing residential stock.
  • Recovery of shells and abandoned buildings for residential use.

Key figures

  • 176 new protected homes will be built across several municipalities.
  • Over €29 million is earmarked for VPO construction, financed jointly by the Ministry, the Canary Islands Government, and the Cabildo.
  • More than 800 dwellings will be upgraded through the Residential Rehabilitation Program (ERRP) and Urban Regeneration and Renewal Areas (ARRU), with a total investment exceeding €24 million contributed by the State, the regional executive, the Cabildo, and local councils.

Official statements

“This is a historic investment in one of the island’s main social challenges,” said Lola García, President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura. “The response comes from institutional responsibility and cooperation between administrations.”

García added that the plan is not limited to building new homes; it aims to “put every tool at the service of a common goal: guaranteeing the right to dignified housing,” emphasizing the need to act on prices so that housing does not remain unaffordable for a large part of the population.

“The Cabildo’s strategy is clear and organized into three lines of work: rehabilitate the existing stock, build protected housing, and recover abandoned buildings and shells that currently serve no social function,” explained Víctor Alonso, Island Housing Minister.

Policy emphasis

The Cabildo stresses that solving the housing crisis goes beyond simply increasing the number of units. The focus is also on:

  • Reducing construction costs.
  • Optimizing the use of available land.
  • Restoring built heritage.
  • Coordinating public policies to enable structural market interventions.

Commitment to the community

Through this substantial investment, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura reaffirms its dedication to a public, social, and sustainable housing policy. The approach is rooted in institutional cooperation and aims to deliver concrete solutions for the island’s residents.
