Cabildo Evaluates First Year of the Island Childhood and Adolescence Plan

The Internal Commission delivers a positive assessment of this first year, reinforcing the institutional commitment to policies aimed at children and youth.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is advancing its monitoring of the Children and Adolescents Plan, which is driven by the Island Children’s Service, part of the Department of Social Action, Diversity, LGTBIQ+, Citizen Participation and Open Government. The service is headed by Víctor Alonso. The plan involves the various Cabildo departments and the Island Council for Children and Adolescents.

On Friday, 27 March, a working meeting was held to further develop the island’s Children and Adolescents Plan, with participation from the Internal Commission for Children and Adolescents. The gathering underscored the Cabildo’s institutional commitment to policies for children and youth.

During the session, key points were addressed, including:

  • Presentation of ongoing activities of the Island Council for Children and Adolescents.
  • Monitoring of the first‑year execution of the plan, based on data collected by the involved Cabildo areas.
  • Clarification of doubts regarding information gathering and strengthening inter‑departmental collaboration for joint actions.

A highlight was the definition of an information‑collection strategy that will provide up‑to‑date, accurate data on the plan’s implementation before June, when a progress report must be submitted to UNICEF.

“With actions like these, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura continues to promote the active participation of children and adolescents, fostering their role in building a more inclusive society that respects their rights,” concluded Víctor Alonso.

Island Council

That same Friday, a new session of the Island Council for Children and Adolescents took place, involving children from the island’s various municipalities. The council meets monthly in different towns, tackling topics related to children’s rights in line with UNICEF’s international days.

In March, the council gathered all its members for a joint session, this time collaborating with the Department of Sports through the traditional games and sports outreach program “Don’t Forget Our Heritage.”

“This initiative, explained councilor Víctor Alonso, highlights the archipelago’s cultural heritage and promotes the right to play, creating spaces for meeting, participation and shared enjoyment among the children and adolescents of the Island Council of Fuerteventura.”
