Cabildo Launches “The Soul of the Island” Campaign on Identity and Heritage
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura unveiled “The Soul of Fuerteventura,” a new Cultural Heritage campaign that seeks to consolidate and promote the island’s material and immaterial cultural wealth – “the essence that makes us unique,” said Cabildo president Lola García.
“We are at a moment when we must make a special effort to teach where we come from, protect, know and showcase our legacy as an island,” García emphasized.
The initiative aims not only to give Majorero heritage a solid, coherent and recognizable image – “like an island with a rich, diverse and well‑preserved identity” – but also to strengthen the sense of belonging and commitment to heritage through awareness, education and active citizen participation in related activities and events.
With the slogan “The Soul of Fuerteventura,” the campaign embraces both tangible and intangible heritage: customs, people, collective memory, and the way of life built on the island’s land, which together “construct a common identity,” García added.
Cultural counselor Rayco León described the project as a large‑scale effort “that seeks to generate community around Majorero heritage, fostering the feeling of identity and belonging among those who live on the island.”
During the presentation, leading figures in the preservation and dissemination of the island’s cultural and historical heritage highlighted the importance of highlighting the memory and legacy of the Majorero people to preserve Fuerteventura’s identity. García and León thanked the many individuals who have worked for heritage over the years, as well as the young people who are concerned and involved in its care and transmission.
Actions for Heritage
Rayco León outlined concrete actions designed to bring heritage closer to the public and make it more visible:
- Dedicated website: patrimoniofuerteventura.com serves as a central hub for information and resources.
- Social‑media outreach: Campaigns on digital platforms showcase Fuerteventura’s heritage and promote responsible interaction with it.
- Cultural cycles and events: Programs link heritage to popular festivals, creating thematic encounters for locals and visitors.
- “Landscapes with History” program: Guided routes across up to thirteen distinct sites, offering immersive historical experiences.
- Open‑door days: Not only in museums and the General Island Archive but also at archaeological field sites, allowing the public to witness heritage in situ.
- Participatory processes: Initiatives such as the Casa del Inglés and La Florida projects involve communities directly in heritage decisions.
- School outreach: Educational activities target students to foster early appreciation and stewardship of cultural assets.
These actions aim to reinforce commitment to the conservation and dissemination of Fuerteventura’s unique cultural legacy.
