Cabildo plenary approves strategic plans for hunting, crafts and trade
In the ordinary session of January, the plenary gave the green light to three documents, which were adopted unanimously by all groups. The strategic grant plans for Commerce and Handicrafts foresee respectively €3 million and €800,000 in funding for the 2026‑2028 fiscal periods. The Island Hunting Plan will soon be made public.
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura unanimously approved three strategic plans covering hunting, handicrafts and commerce, aiming to streamline public aid and strengthen sectors deemed strategic for the island’s economy and identity during 2026‑2028, according to the island corporation’s communication services after the January 2026 ordinary session.
First Island Plan and Technical Hunting Plan
Fuerteventura will, for the first time, have an Island Hunting Plan and a Technical Hunting Plan. These documents have entered the approval process after receiving the plenary’s endorsement. The hunting‑sector planning seeks to regulate hunting activities on the island and to coordinate support measures for the sector.
“It is a breakthrough resulting from the effort carried out by the Hunting Department with actions to guarantee hunting activity and species at the island level,” said Cabildo President Lola García.
“This is a historic day for the Cabildo and the hunting community,” noted Councillor Carlos Rodríguez. “Having a document for the orderly management of hunting on the island helps avoid possible impacts and guarantees the care of natural resources. The priority at all times is the preservation and conservation of natural habitats, as well as maintaining the biological potential of species in their natural environment.”
More Than €3 Million to Boost the Commercial Sector
The plenary approved the Strategic Grant Plan for the Reactivation of the Commercial Sector 2026‑2028, earmarking over €3 million to support local businesses and energize open commercial zones across all municipalities. The plan continues initiatives such as “Yo Compro en Fuerteventura,” provides aid to merchants’ associations, funds municipal dynamisation actions, and includes specific lines for the sector’s digitalisation.
“It is essential to support small businesses, neighbourhood shops and open commercial zones, as they decisively contribute to maintaining economic activity in every municipality,” emphasized Island Councillor Lolina Negrín.
€810,000 in Aid for Artisans
The plenary also approved the Strategic Grant Plan for the Promotion and Dissemination of Fuerteventura Handicrafts 2026‑2028, allocating €810,000 over three years. The plan structures aid into several lines directed at municipalities, associations and professionals, with the goal of:
- Preserving traditional crafts,
- Supporting modernisation, and
- Facilitating the commercialisation of artisan products.
