Cabildo President celebrates €15.6 million water‑treatment plant

Lola García celebrates the approval of funding for the expansion of the Puerto del Rosario wastewater treatment plant

The President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, welcomed the approval by the Government of the Canary Islands’ Council of Government of the financing earmarked for the expansion of the Puerto del Rosario Wastewater Treatment Station (EDAR). The multi‑year budget authorizes a total investment of €15,615,469.09 to carry out the works.

The project is a key initiative for the island, aimed at improving hydraulic infrastructure and addressing a clear need identified in Fuerteventura.

“This approval represents an important step toward making a fundamental project for the municipality a reality, the result of coordinated work between administrations and a commitment to continue improving the island’s water cycle,” García said.

She also highlighted the involvement of the Canary Islands Government’s Department of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water, led by Manuel Miranda, in driving the project forward.

“This action is crucial for both the present and the future of Fuerteventura. It expands an existing facility, strengthens the island’s water resilience, and ensures an adequate service for the municipality’s needs. Moreover, it incorporates more efficient technologies that optimise performance and guarantee greater stability under high‑demand scenarios,” stated Manuel Miranda, Councillor for Territorial Policy, Cohesion and Water.

Both García and Miranda underscored the coordination between the Cabildo, the Canary Islands Government, and the Puerto del Rosario City Council that made the works possible. Mayor David de Vera emphasized the importance of the expansion for improving water treatment and sanitation—essential for urban development in the island’s capital.

The plant’s enlargement will increase treatment capacity, optimise the existing system, and advance water regeneration and reuse, crucial in a territory with limited water resources. Such investments also have a direct impact on environmental protection, the primary sector, and sustainable development.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura reiterates its commitment to continue collaborating with the Canary Islands Government and local municipalities to promote infrastructure that meets the island’s real needs.
