Cabildo urges Canary government to include high school and vocational students in school transport

Fuerteventura, 31 October 2025 – The Full Council of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura approved today an institutional motion urging the Canary Islands Ministry of Education to improve transport conditions for post‑compulsory education students, especially those in Bachillerato (high school) and Formación Profesional (FP) (vocational training) on the island.

Fuerteventura’s population is scattered across several small settlements, making equitable access to educational and transport services difficult. Currently, the lack of routes that match the timetables and locations of post‑compulsory study centres constitutes a significant barrier to academic continuity. In some cases, classrooms are more than four kilometres from the nearest school, with no compatible public or school transport available.

In response, the Cabildo asks the Canary Islands Government to amend the Order of 2 August 2006 so that Bachillerato and FP students become beneficiaries of free school transport, as is already the case in other autonomous communities.

The motion also calls on the President of the Canary Islands Government to create a specific funding line to guarantee this service in non‑capital islands, taking into account Fuerteventura’s particular geographic and demographic realities.

“Coordination between administrations is indispensable to guarantee mobility solutions that allow students to continue their studies,” said Cabildo President Lola García.
She added that the motion offers “collaboration to set up a working group with the Canary Islands Government, municipal councils and educational centres, in order to coordinate transport solutions that meet the real needs of students.”

The approved text also requests a more balanced educational planning that avoids placing study groups in remote locations without adequate transport. The motion will be forwarded to the regional executive, the island’s municipalities, the Bachillerato and FP schools, and the Canary Islands School Council.

Environmental Assessment

During the same plenary session, the Cabildo approved a collaboration agreement with the Municipality of Tuineje to delegate competencies for environmental assessment of plans, projects, and programmes initiated by public or private entities within its territory.

The agreement, requested by the Tuineje council, was adopted unanimously and will streamline the processing of environmental procedures, strengthening institutional cooperation on sustainability and territorial planning.
