Cabildos and the Canary Decree
President García seeks “the broadest consensus and to address the reality of each island.”
The island councils discussed today, during the Ordinary General Assembly of the Canary Islands Federation (FECAI), the contents of the Decreto Canarias that the regional government will forward to the State. The decree gathers urgent measures aimed at maintaining and restoring the social and economic conditions of the archipelago.
The FECAI assembly followed a recent meeting convened by the President of the Canary Islands Government with the FECAM and FECAI to tackle “those historic demands that we have been defending for many years from each island, referring to what is set out in our Statute of Autonomy, the Canary Agenda and the 2023 State Budget allocations, which continue to be extended,” explained FECAI president Lola García.
“It was important to bring this document to FECAI so that it incorporates the contributions of the island councils, enriching the proposal and ensuring it reflects the reality of each island while guaranteeing equity.”
“We are not asking for privileges, but for rights: it is about fulfilling pending obligations to the Canary Islands with key measures for social and economic recovery as an outermost region.”
The roadmap for approval emphasizes that the decree must:
- Preserve the free provision of public transport.
- Increase subsidies for maritime transport.
- Invest in protected housing, socio‑health infrastructure, and roads.
- Provide contributions to the POSEI (Special Plan for the Development of the Primary Sector) and compensate freight transport.
“These are many other priority issues that belong to us by right, so that no island is left behind and, above all, to improve the quality of life of the Canary population.”
FECAI affirmed that it will continue to work in coordination with the Canary Islands Government and all public administrations to advance the decree’s approval, strengthening institutional consensus and defending the interests of the Canary Islands while respecting their territorial uniqueness and ensuring equal opportunities across all islands.
