Canary Coalition welcomes ministry and Totem aligning with the Canary Government

The political formation highlights the perseverance of the people of Antigua “for their tireless fight against an action they considered unjust.”

Asamblea Majorera – Coalición Canaria Fuerteventura announced in a press release that it “values that ministers Óscar López and Ángel Víctor Torres align with the position of the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, to dismiss the proposed location of the telecommunications tower intended for installation in Antigua. This change of course by the current local councilor will allow the study of a new site that does not cause inconvenience to citizens.”

“We welcome the recent communications regarding negotiations with Totem Towers in Madrid and celebrate that the mayor of Antigua has reconsidered and rejected the site that was initially favored in solo talks with the telecom company,” the nationalist party said.

The party added that it has always defended “the search for an alternative location, farther from residential buildings, and has insisted on exhausting the dialogue route with the company.” Consequently, “we thank the authorities for finally responding both to the demands of the municipality’s residents and to the request of this political formation.”

The AM‑CC team especially commended the perseverance of the people of Antigua:

“They have continuously insisted on preventing the infrastructure from being installed at the proposed spot, only 50 metres from homes, due to the possible adverse effects it could cause,” the island executive reiterated.

The party also recognized “the work of the municipal councilors, led by David Alberto Guerra, who promoted talks with President Fernando Clavijo. On 13 August, Manolo Miranda, on behalf of the president, held an initial meeting with Totem to explore alternatives. Since then, Manolo Miranda, Lola García, and David Alberto have been working together, with technical advice, to find a technically viable location away from the town,” the nationalists explained.

Thus, AM‑CC considers it “a success that the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and now also the Ayuntamiento of Antigua are moving in the same direction. This will facilitate the work both administrations and technicians in responding to the population’s needs,” they added.

The Cabildo works on alternatives to the initial location

Regarding possible new sites, the island corporation, led by Lola García, stated that “procedures have begun to make land available in the La Cerquita area, near the ITV, and they are also managing the purchase of land around the Antigua water reservoir. Both locations are technically feasible for installing the telecommunications tower and are therefore candidates to be proposed to the company,” the note explained.

The political formation assures that these alternatives will remain open to neighborhood consensus and to any new suggestions from citizens. For the AM‑CC team, “this new period represents an opportunity to achieve a location that enjoys the backing of both the administrations and the people of Antigua.”
