Canary Government Grants €3.3 Million for Renewable Projects on Developed Sites in Fuerteventura

These are projects to be carried out in “already transformed sites that are in use for human activity, in a more efficient model.”

The Department of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Canary Islands has finalized the allocation of subsidies aimed at promoting photovoltaic energy in anthropized spaces. The call, which originally had a budget of €19 million, was expanded to €101,918,682.44 and ultimately awarded €95,398,063.40 for the installation of 48.33 MW of solar capacity across 277 projects in the archipelago.

Funding Overview

  • The aid line is financed by the EU Next Generation funds.
  • It targets the installation of solar panels on already transformed areas used by human activity, thereby avoiding the occupation of rural or natural land and aligning energy development with soil conservation.

Statements from the Regional Minister

“The closure of this call demonstrates the enormous interest that exists in the Canary Islands to bet on renewable energies and a cleaner, more efficient and sustainable energy model.” – Mariano H. Zapata, Regional Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy

“Expanding the initial budget to over €100 million has allowed us to practically meet all viable initiatives, listening to the demands of stakeholders and with a significant effort from the entire team to boost the impact of the funds across the archipelago. These projects benefit all islands and will be carried out with aid that promotes the use of existing spaces.”

“Accelerating the energy transition while protecting the territory, these more than 48 MW of new photovoltaic capacity represent an important step to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, advance energy sovereignty, and meet the decarbonisation targets set for the Canary Islands.”
