Canary Islands and Fuerteventura Council Review Preliminary Reports to Determine Disability Level

The agreement includes the drafting of technical reports for social‑housing eligibility, access and adaptation to jobs, and access to municipal aid programmes.

The Regional Government Council has approved a pact that tasks the Cabildo of Fuerteventura with preparing the psychological and social reports that will form the basis for the official determination of disability degree on the island.

In a statement, the regional executive explained that, for the implementation of this pact, the Department of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families will allocate €125,055.27 from the Disability Directorate’s budget to cover the costs of Cabildo staff – a psychologist and two social workers.

Medical assessments will continue to be carried out by personnel provided directly by the Directorate, which includes doctors, nurses and an occupational therapist.

According to the Social Welfare Minister, Candelaria Delgado,

“As has already been noted, the non‑capital islands no longer have a waiting list for disability assessments. This means that people obtain their recognition in less than six months.”

“With this agreement, the processing of disability‑degree recognition files on the island will be further accelerated, reinforcing our commitment to achieve more equal islands where place of residence does not determine the level of care or the speed with which rights are obtained.”

The pact also covers the preparation of technical reports for official‑housing allocation, job access and adaptation, municipal aid programmes, and any other documentation required by the multidisciplinary teams that evaluate and certify disability degree.

Management of the process will be coordinated with the multidisciplinary teams, both organically and functionally, at the Disability Assessment Center in Las Palmas, which depends on the Disability Directorate of the Department of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Childhood and Families.

These multidisciplinary teams will issue the proposed rulings based on the medical evaluation and the psychological and social reports prepared by the Cabildo’s staff.

To monitor the results of the agreement and coordinate collaboration between the parties, a Monitoring and Control Commission will be created. Its duties will include ensuring proper compliance with the pact and guaranteeing the exchange of information between the two administrations.
