Canary Islands Announces €29.8 Million Plan to Ease War’s Impact

For a period of 100 days and alongside a series of requests to the Spanish Government

The Vice President of the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, announced the approval of a government‑council document that bundles regional measures and a set of requests to the State to cushion the impact of the war in the Middle East. The package is valued at €29.8 million for a 100‑day period, of which the central government will contribute €15 million.

Domínguez made the announcement at a press conference, following an agreement earlier that Monday between the Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, and President Fernando Clavijo. The Spanish Government will finance the Canary Islands up to June 30 with a little over €15 million for this purpose.

The initiatives outlined in the approved document will now be incorporated into a decree‑law that gives legal effect to the proposals and will be complemented by the demands made to the central executive.

“Among the main measures are a 0 % IGIC (Canary Islands sales tax) on fuels to lower prices, a bonus of up to 99 % for transporters and farmers, and a 0 % IGIC on basic goods such as coffee, salt and butter,” Domínguez explained.

Additional actions approved include:

  • IGIC exemption for self‑employed workers whose annual turnover does not exceed €50,000.
  • Direct aid for the agricultural, livestock, fishing and industrial sectors.

Regarding the requests to the Spanish Government, the Vice President highlighted:

  • A state subsidy on fuel.
  • A reduction of the personal income tax (IRPF).
  • Increased financing and liquidity for companies and self‑employed professionals.
  • An update of investments in transport, water and agriculture.
