Canary Islands budget earmarks €8.8 million for Fuerteventura’s Zurita waste complex
The proposed 2027 environmental budget includes funding for composting and sorting plants at Zurita, while the Canarian government seeks the release of €230 million in European funds.
Fuerteventura’s Zurita environmental complex has been allocated €8.8 million in the proposed Canary Islands 2027 environmental budget for improvements to its composting and waste-sorting plants.
The allocation forms part of a €142.43 million budget for the regional Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy. The department’s ordinary regional funding, excluding the European Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (RRF), is set to rise by 0.36% as the exceptional funding framework ends. The RRF provided more than €311 million to the department in 2026.
Waste and energy spending
The Zurita work is described as the principal investment within the €18.29 million environmental quality budget. The regional government also plans to transfer €2.5 million in European Regional Development Fund money to island councils for circular economy projects and to prepare a new Canary Islands waste plan.
Energy is the ministry’s largest budget area, at €61.26 million, an increase of 5.41% on the previous year’s ordinary budget. Funding for households and third-sector organisations for self-consumption and energy efficiency is set to rise from €2.11 million to €6.77 million. The department also plans to prepare an integrated energy and climate plan for the islands.
Request to release European funds
Regional minister Mariano H. Zapata said the end of the extraordinary European funding period would require greater administrative efficiency. The Canary Islands government is also asking the Spanish government to release €230 million in remaining European funds, which it wants to add to the budget once available.
Other proposed allocations include €11.68 million for biodiversity, up 16.58% on 2026, and €13.40 million for the regional climate change department.
