Canary Islands Council and Government Allocate €35.7 Million to Boost Health‑Social Care Slots in Fuerteventura
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the Government of the Canary Islands will invest €35.7 million to expand sociosanitary places on the island, following the signing of the 2025‑2028 Dependency Agreement. The measure will raise the total to 589 places for seniors, dependent persons, and people with disabilities during the period.
The agreement, signed on Thursday, provides €9.2 million from the Cabildo and €26.4 million from the regional executive, spread over several years. In the 2026 fiscal year alone, the investment will reach €9.4 million, allowing the number of sociosanitary places to grow from 300 to 442 in Fuerteventura.
Statements from Officials
Lola García, island president, emphasized that “care for people is one of the corporation’s fundamental priorities.” She added that the planned rollout will progressively increase available resources and adapt them to the real needs of the population, in coordination with the island’s municipalities.
Víctor Alonso, Councillor for Social Action, explained that the increase translates into 142 new spots, mainly through the Personal Autonomy Promotion Service, already awarded via a social contract. The service will receive a budget of €900,000 in 2026 and will provide home care for 134 dependent individuals, supported by multidisciplinary teams of social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, and specialized staff.
The signing ceremony took place in Gran Canaria alongside the Social Welfare Department of the regional government, headed by Candelaria Delgado. The Canary Islands Government highlighted inter‑institutional collaboration as a key avenue for strengthening the dependency care system across the islands.
Existing and Planned Facilities
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura currently operates a network of sociosanitary resources, including:
- The Residence and Day Center of Puerto del Rosario
- Josefina Plá Center
- Island Residence for Persons with Disabilities
- Occupational centers in Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal
- Supervised housing programs for mental health
- Psychosocial rehabilitation centers
Soon, the Island Residence for Mental Health will open, adding further capacity.
Future Projects
The island corporation is also developing new projects to broaden services:
- The Residence and Day Center for Seniors in Gran Tarajal, adding 90 additional places.
- Planned day centers for seniors in Costa Calma and the Antigua‑Betancuria area, which will contribute 30 new sociosanitary places.
With this investment, the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands are reinforcing the dependency care system in Fuerteventura, moving toward a broader, more accessible, and socially responsive model for the island’s residents.
