Canary Islands Government Allocates €700,000 for Laminator Upgrade at Puerto del Rosario Wastewater Plant

The Council of the Canary Islands approved a €700,000 budget amendment to fund the completion of the laminator reservoir at the Puerto del Rosario wastewater treatment plant. The investment will be managed by the Department of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water.

Project Overview

  • The laminator reservoir is a complementary initiative to the ongoing expansion of the treatment plant, driven by the Directorate General of Water.
  • It will enable daily regulation of incoming wastewater flows, preventing discharges when water volumes exceed the plant’s capacity and maximizing the reuse of treated water.
  • Upon completion, the plant’s total treatment capacity will rise to 6,000 m³ per day.

Key Statements

“This year we have managed to unblock the project and now we are proceeding to complete it, always in coordination with the Fuerteventura Island Council and its Island Water Board,” said Manuel Miranda, Councillor for Territorial Policy, Cohesion and Water.

Miranda highlighted that the project faced several challenges during execution, which the department has successfully overcome.

Timeline and Collaboration

  • Laminator reservoir works are slated for completion in 2026.
  • The plant expansion will follow, with an estimated execution period of around 20 months after the tender is awarded.

Manuel Miranda also emphasized the strong collaboration with the Island Water Board and the local municipality, which has been crucial for both the laminator’s completion and the plant’s expansion.

Expected Benefits

  • Improved water quality for regenerated water, facilitating its reuse in agriculture.
  • Enhanced operational resilience of the wastewater treatment system, reducing the risk of overflow incidents.

The funding marks a significant step toward securing sustainable water management and supporting agricultural needs on the island.
