Canary Islands Government Issues Alert Over Strong Waves Starting Saturday
Waves in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote Expected to Exceed Five Meters
The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands has declared a coastal‑phenomenon alert for the entire archipelago, effective from 06:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 24.
According to the regional government, the decision was taken based on information supplied by the State Meteorological Agency and other available sources, and in application of the Canary Islands Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
Specifically, a combined north‑west sea is expected to reach four to five meters, and on the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura it will likely exceed five meters.
The episode will particularly affect the open coasts facing west, north and northeast, as well as the channels between the islands.
