Canary Islands Government maintains pre‑alert for coastal phenomena in the archipelago

Overview

Wind and sea conditions will dominate throughout the week.

The Canary Islands Government, through the Directorate General for Emergencies, has updated the situation and kept the pre‑alert for coastal phenomena across the entire archipelago, effective from 14:00 today, Monday 9 March.

The decision is based on information provided by the State Meteorological Agency and other available sources, and is applied under the Canary Islands Specific Emergency Plan for Risks from Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

Observations

  • Wind: Northeastern winds at force 4‑6, locally reaching force 7 (50‑61 km/h), especially north of El Hierro; west and north of La Gomera; northwest and southeast of La Palma; southeast of Tenerife; and west of Gran Canaria. Force 8 (62‑74 km/h) is possible in the Anaga‑Agaete channel.
  • Sea: Background sea from the north or northwest, and from the northeast in Gran Canaria, 1‑2 m high, with combined swell that can reach and exceed 2.5 m on open coasts facing north, northeast and west on all islands.
  • Tide coefficient: Low, ranging from 26 on Wednesday 11 March to 48 on Monday 9 March.
