Canary Islands issue pre‑alert as Fuerteventura temperatures could exceed 37°C

The Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre‑alert for maximum temperatures across the entire archipelago starting at 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, due to an expected heat wave that will especially affect the eastern islands.

According to the Directorate General of Emergencies, temperatures in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote could reach, and at times surpass, 37 °C, particularly in interior areas located in the southern half of both islands.

The declaration is based on forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and follows the Canary Islands’ Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

The heat episode will also impact other islands in the archipelago. In Gran Canaria, temperatures above 34 °C are expected in interior zones and on the southern and western slopes, while the mid‑elevations and peaks of Tenerife and La Gomera could see temperatures exceed 32 °C.

Authorities urge the public to take extra precautions during this period of high temperatures, especially elderly people, children, individuals with chronic illnesses, and other vulnerable groups.

Key recommendations include:

  • Stay well‑hydrated at all times.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure during the peak hours of the day.
  • Limit intense outdoor physical activity.

The weather forecast also points to a dry atmosphere and the presence of calima (dusty haze), especially on the eastern islands, for much of the weekend.
